“Ground Zero” – Mobile Phone Technology for Rapid Household Level Diarrhoea Reporting for Community Directed Intervention Initiatives
…Ministry of Health and Sanitation major concern is the management of diarrhea; the third most common cause of mortality/morbidity in the country, with a case fatality of up to 21%. The innovation will implement a mobile phone platform to gather daily diarrhea information at household level and relay it to community health workers for intervention. “Cohesion," a homegrown mobile phone application, simple smart phones and "Simprints" portable biometric scanners will collect and collate household level daily diarrhea information. This project targets…
Human-centered design and piloting of a manually powered spinner to facilitate washing and drying of reusable menstrual pads in Bangladesh urban slums
The International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research is designing, piloting and testing a low-cost, manually-powered spinner for urban slum dwellers in Bangladesh to efficiently and discretely wash and dry their reusable cloth menstrual pads. This project targets displaced Rohingya refugee populations who lack access to affordable feminine hygiene products. The proposed innovation is to introduce …
Vi-Shwas' - An Innovative Model of Physician Leadership. Building trust, building communities.
…Implemented in India, the project involved development of ‘Vishwas’ – a model of physician leadership that places family physicians in the heart of communities. Vishwas was conceived to address the declining role of family medicine in India, where patients are increasingly accessing specialists and specialized care. The first Vishwas Clinic and Community Center was launched in a suburb of Mumbai and offers a wide range of preventive health services for the entire family. With an emphasis on patient-centric design, the Center provides a comfortable experience to its visitors, and offers a place where one can relax, rejuvenate and refresh the mind, body and spirit. Outcome Results showed that the Vishwas model has attracted interest from physicians in India. At Physician Leadership Workshops held in New Delhi and Ahmedabad to promote the model, eight of 120 doctors in attendance expressed an interest in joining the program. The Vishwas Android application and prescription support system has now been launched…timeline and analyze key metrics through a dashboard. Details of the model have been made available through various presentations at workshops. Future plans involve sharing lessons learned with the physician community and scaling up the Physician Leadership program across India (targeting 50 doctors in year one, 500 in year two, and 2,500 in year three).
Discovery of new HIV1 viroporin inhibitors from local natural products
Issue Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has significantly reduced HIV-1 morbidity and mortality. However, fewer than 50% of HIV-1 patients have access to ART in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and the therapy is expensive and can have adverse side effects. Drugs that are locally available and target additional aspects of the HIV life cycle not addressed by current therapies are urgently needed. Viroporin blockers like amantadine are historically proven antivirals, but virtually no viroporin blockers exist for viruses that disproportionately affect LMICs. Solution The team sought to screen natural products to find these viroporin blockers that could be beneficial against HIV-1. Using electrophysiology (EP)…funding, as additional research is required before clinical trials or commercialization can be undertaken. In the interim, the team will continue to engage non-profit funding agencies to support this work. Funds were leveraged as follows: $15,000 from industry sources to perform pre-clinical studies on a Vpu inhibitor; $60,000 from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC); $10,000 from Simon…

Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Adolescents and Young Women in Haiti: State of Affairs, Development and Implementation of Prevention and Intervention Tools
The project aims to reduce sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) among adolescents and young women and to promote gender equality using a radio and social media educational campaign and a bystander approach in the pilot site of Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. The project will conduct a national inquiry into the prevalence of SGBV and a qualitative study to help understand the subjective experiences of survivors and the motivations of perpetrators, along with the implementation of an integrated program for preventing and addressing SGBV.

Develop novel malaria vaccines against Plasmodium vivax
Issue Plasmodium vivax malaria is geographically the most widespread malarial disease across the world. While generally considered to be benign, a number of reports have shown P. vivax malaria can be severe. Solution The project sought to generate crucial novel data on the biochemical and functional characterization of the P. vivax reticulocyte binding protein (PvRBP) antigens – potent targets for a P. vivax vaccine. While, the mechanisms underlying the red cell invasion process of P. falciparum have been studied in great detail, similar studies on P. vivax have been lacking. P. vivax invades a small subset of young, immature red cells known as reticulocytes, which constitute up to 1% of human blood. A central dogma of P. vivax invasion is that it is completely dependent on the interaction between the duffy receptor on reticulocytes…
Scaling-up early childhood care and development services for children of India's migrant workers in vulnerable worksites
…provision of onsite childcare services in India's industrial workplaces where vulnerable migrants work, such as construction sites, brick kilns, tea plantations and factories. The model's innovation lies in the partnership between employers, government, community groups, civil society organizations working together to scale up this early childhood care and development service across urban and rural areas.
Quadruple Fortification of Salt: Reducing dietary deficiencies by fortifying salt with iodine, iron, folic acid and vitamin B12
Nutritional deficiencies, caused primarily by poor diets and seasonally interrupted food supply, can result in a range of disabilities including impaired brain development and cognition, reduced immunity, and poor pregnancy outcomes. Deficiencies in iodine, iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 pose a significant health risk that is especially harmful to women of childbearing age, and contributes to infant mortality and morbidity. Quadruple Fortified Salt builds off a proprietary microencapsulation technology previously used to create Double Fortified Salt to fortify salt with these micronutrients as a complementary solution to efforts aimed…
