A uterine balloon tamponade to treat maternal mortality from postpartum hemorrhage
To address a major gap in technology availability, PATH and Sinapi Biomedical have collaborated to design and develop the Ellavi uterine balloon tamponade (UBT) to treat maternal mortality from postpartum hemorrhage. This low-cost, fully assembled UBT was designed specifically for use in low-resource health facilities. The Ellavi UBT addresses issues with the cost, assembly and safety of other devices, providing this lifesaving technology to healthcare workers.
Implementing neonatal intensive care methods in Guyana to save lives of neonates with respiratory distress
…born in the nation’s largest city and capital, at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). GPHC has a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) but mortality remains high, due to problems of insufficient education, limited experience and minimal equipment. With the Ministry of Health of Guyana as a partner, Guyana Help the Kids (GHTK) is receiving a $350,000 Grand Challenges Canada grant to augment $250,000 from its own resources for equipment, education, and support to physicians and staff, to improve the survival rate of high-risk neonates in Guyana. The project will lift and sustain the level of neonatal intensive care at…nurses throughout Guyana – in particular those at the five network hospitals, which account for more than 80 per cent of all deliveries in the nation.“We intend to significantly decrease neonatal mortality by empowering Guyanese healthcare providers through education and technology, which will ensure sustainability,” says Dr. Narendra Singh, founder of Guyana Help the Kids.

The Maternal PPH Wrap
Post-partum hemorrhage (PPH) is a leading cause of maternal mortality in low- and middle-income countries. The Maternal PPH Wrap is a user-friendly and affordable medical device to control PPH before professional intervention is available. The device can be used to administer external aortic compression, by application of a radial force on the descending aorta. This…the uterus, managing PPH. This innovation is being implemented in Uganda, where many women give birth at home or clinic with the assistance of a family member or traditional birth attendant.
