Empowering local grocers to reduce malnutrition in children under the age of 2 years in rural Tanzania
…age of five in developing countries. If a child is malnourished during the first two years of life, the child’s physical and mental development will be slowed to such an extent that no correction is possible, even when the child eventually grows older. Food shortages, mainly caused by a lack of technology needed for higher yields (such as nitrogen fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation), high food prices, poor food distribution and poor knowledge are some of the causes of poor nutrition in developing countries. Solution The project team developed and evaluated a community support system to empower local grocers to reduce malnutrition in children under the age of two years in rural Tanzania. This approach was based on the observation that…and nutrient intake, feeding style and food safety. Outcome The results of the project show that a grocer-based model was effective in enhancing child nutritional status. The Burn Survival Kit: A High-Tech Algorithm for Low-Income Countries
…worldwide and 90% of burn-related deaths occur in low- or middle-income countries (LMIC). Burn prevention programs are often non-existent in developing countries and there is variable access to quality acute care. Solution The project team sought to develop a Burn Survival Kit to provide an inexpensive, sustainable solution for burns in low-income countries. Each kit contains oral rehydration salts (ORS) for restoring lost fluids and a silver nanotechnology dissolvable dressing to prevent infection, as well as…32 participants. Outcome In a murine model, researchers were able to demonstrate the antimicrobial effectiveness of the dressing through both quantitative (histological) and qualitative (subjective) examinations. This supported in-vitro findings as to the effectiveness of the dressing. The current estimated cost of manufacturing the dressing is 90% less than Acticoat™ and the ORS component is…
Nutritional supplement-enriched water purifier
IssueWater contamination and malnutrition of children and families is an issue faced by many in India. Clean water is a particularly large issue for slum dwellers in and around the outskirts of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.SolutionThe project aimed to accomplish water purification and simultaneous fortification with nutrients using the swellable granules as the filter aid encased in the teabag. They designed and tested a tea dispenser that incorporated indigenous biodegradable polymers, known as Ispaghula Husk and Sodium Alginate, to purify and fortify water. The project attempted to purify water by removing carcinogens and microorganisms.A methylene blue dye was used to gauge water purity during and after treatment. OutcomeThe results of the project supported the hypothesis that the design of the tea dispenser is essential for the interaction and complete removal of contaminants from the water. Using the indigenous polymers, 99%…
