Xcelerator Blog 1: Xcelerator Training Program for Saving Lives at Birth Grantees
Laura Sampath, National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA) Stretch, pivot, generate, align, solve. These are the strategic “boot camp” moves that global innovators will be expected to master over the next 3 and ½ days of the Xcelerator Training Program, an immersive and intensive training to help global innovators bring their groundbreaking innovations to…world. Twelve teams of grantees have flown in from all over the U.S. and as far away as Bangladesh, Kenya, Nepal and Zambia to develop their innovations for global impact. From preventing and treating preeclampsia to delivering neo-natal intensive care, the grantees’ innovations must succeed for the poorest mothers and infants in developing countries. The grantees arrived at the training ready for their first assignment. Each was called to the front of the room to give an elevator pitch about their innovation in sixty-seconds or be interrupted by a timer blaring “ah-ooo-gah” like an antique care horn: For the populations your solution is intended to solve, What are the impacts that those people feel?…

We are delighted to announce that the Health Finance Coalition (HFC) has received an ecosystem catalyst grant of CAD $500,000 from Grand Challenges Canada. Xcelerator Blog 3: Xcelerator Training Programs Asks Global Innovators to Think Like Investors
Laura Sampath, National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA) “Entrepreneurs with great ideas are often told to have unwavering conviction in their own beliefs and innovations,” said Xcelerator instructor James Barlow, “but there’s a very fine line between confidence and delusion.” Barlow was leading a session to challenge Saving Lives at Birth innovators to think…asked to consider the risks associated with their innovation and identify which would be the most concerning from an investor’s point of view. Barlow gave this advice for going about the process of risk identification. “When you are developing your innovation,” Barlow said, “seek out every perspective you can, especially from the people who you…acceptable to the end user? ·        Change communications (Even if the product or service is acceptable, is a change in end user behavior required to ensure its uptake?) ·        Policy support for the product or service in the target environment Barlow urged the teams to think of market development and product development as “two strands of a double helix” constantly informing one another and “driving the ultimate solution”. The team left the session with the assignment to think about the criteria they might set for making a go/no-go decision, or when to pivot in a new direction. This blog has been cross-posted from…

It is therefore important to consider what advantages or barriers exist that perpetuate disparities in actual health status among different groups of people, both within and across populations. In Canada, this often means addressing the unique needs of First Nation, Inuit, or MĂ©tis populations, as well as immigrant…populations, and that if we consider outcomes such as food security, access to nutritious food, purchasing power, social organization, community cohesion, etc., there are many reasons to promote a mixture of farm sizes and technologies. In particular, he referenced the mental health benefits of being involved in a community gardening or farming project, even here in downtown Toronto; while such a project cannot compete with large commercial farms for efficiency in producing food products, there are other non-market benefits that contribute significantly to individuals’ and communities’ well-being. Thanks to Dr. Cole for an interesting and inspiring conversation! The content was fascinating and the career commentary and advice will be…
