Grand Challenges Canada

We’re proud to be listed as one of the top 10 funders financing global mental health in Prospira Global’s recent report! The report, titled, “The Power of Giving: Global Mental Health Financing Insights,” launched on October 18, 2024, at The REAL Summit.

The report is Prospira Global’s first annual Global Mental Health Financing Insights report. Despite the growing need for mental health prevention, support, and services, there remains an underinvestment in mental health. In turn, the report emphasizes the critical role that private philanthropy plays in this global issue by increasing transparency and sharing expert insights in global mental health philanthropy.

Addressing mental health is crucial to building healthier communities, and innovative approaches are transforming how mental health prevention, promotion, and care is supported—especially in regions with limited access. We are grateful to be funding this work in partnership with Global Affairs Canada, Fondation Botnar, and the UK’s Department of Social Care, and are excited to see more funders stepping up to join us. Together, we can make a lasting impact on mental health worldwide,” says Dr. Karlee Silver, CEO, Grand Challenges Canada.

Over the past decade, Grand Challenges Canada (GCC) has supported one of the largest Global Mental Health innovations portfolios, investing $60.74 M CAD to support 144 projects across 45 low- and middle-income countries. Building on this foundation, GCC now hosts the Being Initiative, an international mental health initiative envisioning a world where young people feel well and thrive. In partnership with Fondation Botnar, the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Research, Orygen, the Science for Africa Foundation, and United for Global Mental Health, Being invests in research, innovation, and ecosystem building, focusing on prevention and promotion in 12 priority countries.
